The 'Big Bolton Health Check' was launched this month in an effort to raise awareness of heart disease - still the biggest killer in the UK - and intends to insure that thousands of people tested over the coming ten months.

The tests are completely free and are directed at people aged forty-five years and over, as these are the highest risk group for contracting the disease and cardiovascular related critical illnesses like strokes.

The NHS backed tests were launched in Victoria Square but will be available right across the area in everything from bingo halls and barber shops, to cafés, supermarkets and amusement arcades.

Bolton was chosen as it apparently has one of the highest rates of cardiovascular dysfunction in the whole region, with the Bolton Primary Care Trust revealing that cardiovascular diseases kill about one thousand people a year in the Bolton area, which is more than a third of all deaths.

The potentially life-saving test itself takes about ten minutes and involves testing cholesterol through a finger prick and painless blood pressure checks, a look at body - mass indices and a brief overview of family history as it relates to heart disease...

As well as the venues already mentioned, the tests will of course also be available for free through GP surgeries and other community health centres. If you are interested just check online or look out for the many notices that will be springing up throughout Bolton.

If you live in or around Bolton and you don't think health insurance or critical illness policies are relevant to you, why not drop by a test centre to see if a reappraisal might be in order...?
