With so many Critical Illness Policies available on the market today, which one should you choose? Today we'll cover a few different aspects that you should consider when buying Critical Illness Cover.
Life & Critical Illness Cover
As the market stands it is sensible to include Life Insurance with your Critical Illness Cover as there is little difference in cost, in fact in some circumstances it is cheaper due to increased competition. The added benefit of including Life Insurance within your Critical Illness Policy is that you if you die within the policy's survival period then the policy will still pay out. Critical Illness Survival period is the number of days that the insurance company states you must live for following diagnosis of a critical illness in order for a claim to be paid, most companies use 14 days as this value. If however you incorporate life insurance, the claim would be paid under the death benefit side of the contract so in essence removing the survival period.
Children's Critical Illness Cover | Child's Critical Illness Cover
Many companies in the marketplace now offer free Critical Illness Cover for children when you take out your Critical Illness Cover. Any claims made on the child's cover does not usually come out of your sum assured and is there purely as an additional benefit. Some companies also allow claims on more that one child. Companies will set a maximum value for Children's Critical Illness Cover and we recommended speaking to a financial advisor before taking out cover.

- Coronary artery by-pass grafts - with surgery to divide the breastbone
- Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD)

- Heart attack - of specified severity
- Heart valve replacement or repair - with surgery to the breastbone
- HIV infection - caught from a blood transfusion, a physical assault or at work in an eligible occupation
- Kidney failure - requiring dialysis
- Liver failure
- Loss of hands or feet - permanent physical severance
- Loss of speech - permanent and irreversible
- Major organ transplant
- Motor neuron disease - resulting in permanent symptoms
- Multiple Sclerosis - with persisting symptoms
- Paralysis of limbs - total and irreversible
- Parkinson's disease - resulting in permanent symptoms
- Stroke - resulting in permanent symptoms
- Third degree burns - covering 20% of the body’s surface area
